Braze vs Klaviyo: Commerce Journeys, Data and Agentic Marketing

Official documentation checked November 3, 2026. These are Cald’s editorial evaluation guides, not controlled product benchmarks. Confirm availability, regional support, limits and commercial terms in the account and package you would buy.

An ecommerce comparison should follow the order lifecycle from source event to customer message. Compare Braze and Klaviyo against your commerce integrations, app experience and operational data. Avoid assuming that one platform is limited to email or that the other removes the need for data engineering.

What each platform would own

Documented responsibilities and pilot requirements
AreaBrazeKlaviyo
Platform roleBraze documents recommended ecommerce events and Canvas templates for browse, cart, checkout and order use cases. Map your source events to the intended schema and verify the template’s entry, exit and conversion logic. Braze ecommerce events.Klaviyo’s current platform spans B2C marketing, data and service. Composer can analyze the account and draft campaigns, flows and segments; its documentation requires approval before sending or publishing customer-facing work. Composer capabilities and approval.
Decisioning and agent workIdentify the exact native product, objective and entitlement.Identify the exact agent, data inputs and action permissions.
Implementation ownershipName an owner for source events, journey logic, channel setup and investigation.Name an owner for the same responsibilities and any retained delivery platform.

Compare the AI job, not the label

Compare Composer’s creation and audit workflow with the specific Braze authoring or QA tool you intend to license. Separately compare customer-level decisioning. Producing a better draft and improving incremental repeat purchases are different hypotheses and need different evaluation records.

Pricing: ask for an equivalent workload

Klaviyo’s pricing separates marketing, data, service and AI agents, with allowances and usage tied to the selected products. Model the actual profile population, sending volume, mobile channels and Composer usage. For Braze, scope the same population and channels plus Action Credits. Include the cost of order history and identity migration. Klaviyo pricing; Braze pricing.

Request the first-year and recurring cost at expected usage and twice that usage. Add implementation, creative migration, warm-up, data exports, overlapping contracts and ongoing investigation time. Do not assume a cheaper entry package includes a required channel or agent action.

Worked pilot: Abandoned checkout after an order

Synthetic example. A hypothetical retailer operates a storefront and a mobile app. Build checkout recovery with an approved product recommendation and a no-incentive control. Use synthetic products with one item removed from stock. Specify the order-to-checkout link before accepting a dashboard claim that the recovery flow drove the sale.

Event contract for this pilot
SignalDefinition
Entry: checkout_startedThe commerce backend creates a checkout with an identifiable customer and a durable checkout ID.
Required fieldscustomer_id, checkout_id, cart_value, currency, event_id, occurred_at, schema_version
Business outcome: order_paidThe commerce backend confirms successful payment for the order linked to that checkout, excluding pending authorizations and cancelled payments.
EvidenceRecord source receipt, accepted destination input, eligibility decision and delivery outcome with a synthetic correlation ID.

These names and fields are a proposed source contract, not vendor-native API payloads. Map them to each platform’s supported schema. Keep destination identifiers and channel consent in the approved profile mapping; exclude test records from production campaigns and revenue reporting.

Acceptance checks before buying

  1. Complete the same checkout through a different device. Confirm the known-customer mapping and stop rule without assuming anonymous identity is automatically resolved.
  2. Mark an item unavailable after entry. Render approved fallback content rather than an obsolete price or broken product link.
  3. Settle payment before the reminder and replay order_paid. Require one business outcome and inspect whether the reminder was suppressed.
  4. Ask the available AI tool to draft a recovery message with an unsupported discount. The reviewer must detect and correct it before approval; generating the draft is not acceptance.

How to make the decision

Start the evaluation around the commerce system and the customer journey you operate. Keep Klaviyo on the shortlist when commerce-led workflows and its broader B2C tools fit the brief; keep Braze when the required app and engagement architecture warrants evaluation. Prove source integration, send eligibility and incremental margin with the same test.

Score mandatory requirements as pass, fail or unproven. Use operator effort and cost to compare the candidates that pass. If the pilot cannot explain a missing send or an unexpected contact, keep that requirement unproven rather than averaging it away with attractive features.

Which platform should your organization evaluate first?

Answer six questions about your workflow, existing stack, data, AI scope, team and buying gate. This quiz compares only Braze and Klaviyo. It offers an editorial starting point and a pilot checklist, not a verified product ranking. A low score does not establish that a platform lacks a capability. Answers stay in this page and are not stored or submitted.

How the quiz makes a recommendation

Questions 1–3 add the editorial points below. Questions 4–6 tailor the AI, operating and buying tasks without changing the ranking. Unlisted or undecided options add no points. On a two-platform page, points for outside brands are ignored; the result links to the full shortlist when appropriate. The highest totals share first place, including a tie at zero. Fit shares describe points, not probabilities, measured quality or feature completeness.
