Braze vs Emarsys: SAP Engagement Cloud and Customer Journeys

Official documentation checked November 3, 2026. These are Cald’s editorial evaluation guides, not controlled product benchmarks. Confirm availability, regional support, limits and commercial terms in the account and package you would buy.

Emarsys is now presented by SAP as SAP Engagement Cloud. Keep the familiar Emarsys name in the evaluation, but require the proposal to identify the current product, edition and migration scope. A recognizable brand name does not guarantee that an old entitlement or integration guide applies to a new contract.

What each platform would own

Documented responsibilities and pilot requirements
AreaBrazeEmarsys
Platform roleBraze combines engagement with data ingestion, segmentation, orchestration and AI features in its published packaging. Confirm how your order and inventory sources reach the platform rather than assuming an integration named in a slide is already configured. Braze platform scope.SAP’s current Engagement Cloud page connects engagement with enterprise and operational data, including SAP Business Suite integrations. It describes Joule-based tasks and insights alongside omnichannel orchestration. Treat those product statements as items to demonstrate in the proposed edition. SAP Engagement Cloud overview and naming.
Decisioning and agent workIdentify the exact native product, objective and entitlement.Identify the exact agent, data inputs and action permissions.
Implementation ownershipName an owner for source events, journey logic, channel setup and investigation.Name an owner for the same responsibilities and any retained delivery platform.

Compare the AI job, not the label

For SAP, ask which Joule actions are available to your account, what business context they can access, and how changes are approved. For Braze, identify the agent or decisioning product and objective. A conversational marketing assistant, a predicted audience and per-customer optimization are three distinct demonstrations.

Pricing: ask for an equivalent workload

Use a scoped SAP Engagement Cloud proposal and a Braze proposal with the same regions, brands and traffic assumptions. Include integration middleware, operational-data licensing, non-production environments, support and implementation. Do not infer an Engagement Cloud price from an unrelated SAP product or an old Emarsys package.

Request the first-year and recurring cost at expected usage and twice that usage. Add implementation, creative migration, warm-up, data exports, overlapping contracts and ongoing investigation time. Do not assume a cheaper entry package includes a required channel or agent action.

Worked pilot: Back-in-stock messaging with operational data

Synthetic example. A synthetic retailer has regional warehouses and customers subscribed to product notifications. Join product availability to the region and each customer’s current request and consent. Inventory availability is not a customer event: the integration must derive the eligible recipients without broadcasting to everyone who once viewed the product.

Event contract for this pilot
SignalDefinition
Entry: product_availability_changedThe inventory service changes a product from unavailable to sellable in the customer’s fulfillment region.
Required fieldsproduct_id, region, availability_version, sellable_at, event_id, occurred_at, schema_version
Business outcome: back_in_stock_order_paidA paid order contains the requested product and is linked to the eligible stock-notification cohort, with returns tracked separately.
EvidenceRecord source receipt, accepted destination input, eligibility decision and delivery outcome with a synthetic correlation ID.

These names and fields are a proposed source contract, not vendor-native API payloads. Map them to each platform’s supported schema. Keep destination identifiers and channel consent in the approved profile mapping; exclude test records from production campaigns and revenue reporting.

Acceptance checks before buying

  1. Restock a product in one region while another remains unavailable. Only the eligible regional requests should enter the proposed workflow.
  2. Send an older availability version after a newer out-of-stock update. Require the data pipeline to preserve the intended current state.
  3. Remove consent after the audience is prepared and before delivery. Inspect final eligibility using the supported configuration.
  4. Disable the inventory feed and demonstrate alerting, stale-data behavior and recovery without replaying old stock notifications.

How to make the decision

Evaluate Emarsys / SAP Engagement Cloud where enterprise operational data and the SAP environment are central to the brief. Evaluate Braze with the same source freshness and recipient rules. Shared vendor ownership can simplify some procurement or integration work, but it does not prove that inventory, identity or consent mappings are correct.

Score mandatory requirements as pass, fail or unproven. Use operator effort and cost to compare the candidates that pass. If the pilot cannot explain a missing send or an unexpected contact, keep that requirement unproven rather than averaging it away with attractive features.

Which platform should your organization evaluate first?

Answer six questions about your workflow, existing stack, data, AI scope, team and buying gate. This quiz compares only Braze and Emarsys / SAP Engagement Cloud. It offers an editorial starting point and a pilot checklist, not a verified product ranking. A low score does not establish that a platform lacks a capability. Answers stay in this page and are not stored or submitted.

How the quiz makes a recommendation

Questions 1–3 add the editorial points below. Questions 4–6 tailor the AI, operating and buying tasks without changing the ranking. Unlisted or undecided options add no points. On a two-platform page, points for outside brands are ignored; the result links to the full shortlist when appropriate. The highest totals share first place, including a tie at zero. Fit shares describe points, not probabilities, measured quality or feature completeness.
